i'm from pa and my sister lives very near the lake. we are planning a family vacation around memorial day. I hope to bring my boat down and fish and tube while there. i'm hoping someone on here can help me with a few things..... we will be fishing around the eaton ferry bridge.
a few questions: can i fish anywhere on the lake with a Va. lic?
i can find when bass season opens down there?
i heard there are plenty of long nose gar in the lake. We might like to try and bow fish for them. do i need any special lic for that and are they prevalent in the day light hours or is this a night time thing with lights? we bowfish for carp in the lakes up here but during the spawning season when we see them during the day.
any help would be great!

There is no seasons as there are in Pa. I am also from Pa and heading down 5/11/2013. Great water all around the Eaton Ferry Bridge. Pigeon Roost has some nice water. Plenty of Gar down there...as far as I am concerned spear them all. Not sure if you are permitted to shoot them like carp up here. Need one of the locals to answer that question. We've been going down there every year since 1990. Love the place. Let me know how you make out down there fishing. I will keep in touch after we finish up on the 18th. Have a great day.

Forgot about the license. You can fish on Lake Gaston with either a North Carolina or Virginia license. Get it on line or pick one up down there.

thanks man. ya lets compare notes. i'm no pro fisherman but will be hitting the water evryday we are there. i called the nc wildlife and it is legal to bow fish there even on the 10 day lic. hope to just see a few gar. getting an arrow in one would be a super bonus! ever fish for the catfish? is it like here on the river? slip sinker and some worm or is it bigger baits , floats ect?

That's cool that you can bow fish. You will see carp and gar. Go back in the back of the creeks and you'll see plenty. Some real battleship carp. Bigger than what's in our rivers. I hooked a 4'+ gar a few years ago. Took me about 15 minutes to finally unhook him. Some huge catfish. We don't fish for them other than throwing out a chicken liver at our docks. Caught some nice channel cats. They do have some huge blue catfish though. We fish for bass primarily. Some late evening and night fishing for Stripers. Beautiful clean lake!! Can't wait to get there in 4 weeks!!!

ya the only draw back to the bow fishing is you cant catch/kill grass carp so rather than make a mistake we will only take shots at gar. i got my boat apart now doing a transom job...... hope i get it together before then!
